Hi Kat,
Appendix 7, the instructions page for the Isolates Group, is supposed to be gibberish. Each group gets different tools, as part of the game. It shows that in real life ‘the rules’ or ‘the instructions’ aren’t always legible or don’t always make sense.
This game takes lots of prep but works very well, especially as a simulation game with younger students.
Debriefing is the most important part so make sure to leave a good ½ hour for it!

St.Thomas Aquinas is pumped up! Our THINKfast day is Friday, March 5th and we are so excited! I feel such great satisfaction in knowing that what we’re doing this for a good cause! I LOVE THIS !!! More videos will be posted on our site(s) Be sure to look out for us!
I am in the process of booking the camp sites at Arrowhead Provincial Park, so if those people who are for sure coming could confirm with me, that would be great! Also, we are anticipating at least 48-50 coming on the trip so I will be booking 8 camp sites at 6 ppl per site. I want to book them early to en…sure we are all close by, if i could have 6 volunteers that would allow me to put their name, address, and phone number as a permit holder that would be much appreciated. There is no payment involved just your info as the camp site permit holder (as you are not allowed to book more then one site, in the same time period)

Thanks for your question. We support close to 200 Partner organizations in more than 30 countries in Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Middle East. The majority of our partners involve young people in their work – with youth groups and training for young people. Our programming does not focus on building physical schools.
But check this out — here is an example of one of our Partners working with youth and education: The Forum for Development, Culture and Dialogue, an organization based in Beirut but working in several countries in the Middle East. They work with youth on peacebuilding and non violent communication – bringing together young people from various Middle eastern countries. They organized a week-long workshop for 16 young men and 16 young women from Iraq and Lebanon on peacebuilding and collaboration across borders. They also trained 25 Lebanese, Iraqi and Palestinian young journalists on pro-peace communications.

We are a youth led development organization based in Liberia. We have read through your website and we very much interested in working along with your organization.
Hoping to you hear from you all as we all strive to make our one world better place to be.
It is very encouraging to hear the strides that have been made by the church in the Philippines to become a church of the poor. So often these efforts have been quashed by authorities or have reverted to old-style traditions. Our solidarity visit group in Pernambuco, Brazil, heard a lot about how the church HAD been a great leader in promoting the cause of the poor and a leade in building social movements in the 70’s and 80’s but it seems now to be more of a memory than a reality.

We have programs in Madagascar. Here is the link to learn more about our projects there. Development and Peace does not have any specific projects on children’s working conditions – but we do support school programs in a number of countries (Philippines, Afghanistan and more) and we have a partner in Peru, called MANTHOC,(click here) who help street kids organize themselves to get better and safer jobs, and have classes after work so they can go to school too. It’s a super cool program and they have their own website, but it is in Spanish (click here). MANTHOC would be a neat project to do a report on. You can also google MANTHOC to see what others have to say about their program. I hope this info helps you in your project.

On Bottled Water Free Day (Wed March 10) the Canadian Catholic Students’ Association invites YOU to post as your facebook status:
Nice upbeat post about people taking action for the environment! Similar sustainability events have been occuring at other NS schools like SMU and DAL as well.
Along with all these students, the Ecology Action Center (EAC) in Halifax, NS acts as voice for the environment in Nova Scotia. I am a pre-service teacher at a Catholic middle school in Red Deer, Alberta, and we held our THINKfast this past weekend. Just wanted to report that the event was a huge success attended by 45 students grades 6-9! Together we raised just over $1900 and had a lot of fun!

I run youth ministry at my little francophone catholic church in Verdun, Quebec, and would like to get kids involved in social justice issues. I just learned about ThinkFast, and was wondering if materials are available in French? This has a full explanation of how we use funds internationally and within Canada and outlines the percentages in each category. In 2009-2010, 76% of our funds were spent directly on international programs and emergency aid.
Also, we are working to reduce the cost of administration for the THINKfast campaign by developing more online tools, which require less money to be spent on postage, staff hours and print materials, so encourage your group to fundraise online!

Unfortunately, there is no Solidarity Tour scheduled for the summer of 2013. This decision was made in light of the many changes to our structure that resulted from the loss in funding from CIDA. The Bead Game looks great, and I would like to use it – but the 7th Appendix (Isolate Group instructions) is gibberish… help?

Appendix 7, the instructions page for the Isolates Group, is supposed to be gibberish. Each group gets different tools, as part of the game. It shows that in real life ‘the rules’ or ‘the instructions’ aren’t always legible or don’t always make sense.
This game takes lots of prep but works very well, especially as a simulation game with younger students.
Debriefing is the most important part so make sure to leave a good ½ hour for it!

I am in the process of booking the camp sites at Arrowhead Provincial Park, so if those people who are for sure coming could confirm with me, that would be great! Also, we are anticipating at least 48-50 coming on the trip so I will be booking 8 camp sites at 6 ppl per site. I want to book them early to en…sure we are all close by, if i could have 6 volunteers that would allow me to put their name, address, and phone number as a permit holder that would be much appreciated. There is no payment involved just your info as the camp site permit holder (as you are not allowed to book more then one site, in the same time period)

Thanks for your question. We support close to 200 Partner organizations in more than 30 countries in Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Middle East. The majority of our partners involve young people in their work – with youth groups and training for young people. Our programming does not focus on building physical schools.
But check this out — here is an example of one of our Partners working with youth and education: The Forum for Development, Culture and Dialogue, an organization based in Beirut but working in several countries in the Middle East. They work with youth on peacebuilding and non violent communication – bringing together young people from various Middle eastern countries. They organized a week-long workshop for 16 young men and 16 young women from Iraq and Lebanon on peacebuilding and collaboration across borders. They also trained 25 Lebanese, Iraqi and Palestinian young journalists on pro-peace communications.

It is very encouraging to hear the strides that have been made by the church in the Philippines to become a church of the poor. So often these efforts have been quashed by authorities or have reverted to old-style traditions. Our solidarity visit group in Pernambuco, Brazil, heard a lot about how the church HAD been a great leader in promoting the cause of the poor and a leade in building social movements in the 70’s and 80’s but it seems now to be more of a memory than a reality.

A firsthand account of National Day of Outrage- can’t even imagine the movement of people across the Philippines that day! This chain of events in Hacienda Luisita’s history says a lot for the movement towards solidarity; both locally, globally and in the heart of each person present that day.

We have programs in Madagascar. Here is the link to learn more about our projects there. Development and Peace does not have any specific projects on children’s working conditions – but we do support school programs in a number of countries (Philippines, Afghanistan and more) and we have a partner in Peru, called MANTHOC,(click here) who help street kids organize themselves to get better and safer jobs, and have classes after work so they can go to school too. It’s a super cool program and they have their own website, but it is in Spanish (click here). MANTHOC would be a neat project to do a report on. You can also google MANTHOC to see what others have to say about their program. I hope this info helps you in your project.

Nice upbeat post about people taking action for the environment! Similar sustainability events have been occuring at other NS schools like SMU and DAL as well.
Along with all these students, the Ecology Action Center (EAC) in Halifax, NS acts as voice for the environment in Nova Scotia. The EAC is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year with 40 days of actions between April 22nd and May 31st & we’re looking for some guest bloggers to post about the events on our blog or their own blog that we can link back to or repost.

I am a pre-service teacher at a Catholic middle school in Red Deer, Alberta, and we held our THINKfast this past weekend. Just wanted to report that the event was a huge success attended by 45 students grades 6-9! Together we raised just over $1900 and had a lot of fun!

This has a full explanation of how we use funds internationally and within Canada and outlines the percentages in each category. In 2009-2010, 76% of our funds were spent directly on international programs and emergency aid.
Also, we are working to reduce the cost of administration for the THINKfast campaign by developing more online tools, which require less money to be spent on postage, staff hours and print materials, so encourage your group to fundraise online!

On March 30th Assumption College School in Brantford held our first ever Thinkfast. We stayed overnight at the school (around 90 people) and we raised over 10 thousand dollars. Just wanted to say great job to all the students who participated.

Unfortunately, there is no Solidarity Tour scheduled for the summer of 2013. This decision was made in light of the many changes to our structure that resulted from the loss in funding from CIDA.
